The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
The Lost Symbol is a noble attempt by Dan Brown to duplicate his success with The DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, though of course with a new puzzle to solve.
This time he brings in the secretive world of the Masons, and how the founding fathers of the United States planned to make this a country liberated not just from George III and other monarchs, but superstition.
Instead of chasing through Rome or other cities in Europe with long distant pasts, we go through Washington D.C. in a way not on the usual sightseeing tours.
Once again Langdon is accompanied by a beautiful woman. Once again cutting edge science is part of the mix, though in this case I’d call is pseudo-science. And it’s entirely secondary to the main plot. It the Noetic Institute weren’t there, we’d never miss it.
I have to assume his facts as such are correct, and I’d be interested in knowing a lot more. I have to assume there are other possible spins to account for the weird symbolism in our nation’s capital.
The villain is a weird, powerful crackpot. Unfortunately, he’s once again representing only himself, though in his craziness he sometimes thinks of himself as representing the universe’s forces of evil.
I’d like to see Brown tackle a real-life conspiracy, instead of just somebody using one to as a disguise.
One part I found aggravating is the author’s insistence on Langdon being so skeptical of the existence of a real life lost word on symbol in Washington D.C. He insists it’s just a myth, when of course we the readers know the author has got to deliver something before the end of the book.
This would seem more appropriate if it were Langdon’s first adventure. But you’d think the man who discovered the Holy Grail just a few years would be a little more open to lost Masonic secrets.
People who considered The DaVinci Code to be an attack on organized Christianity are probably not going to be any happier with this book. It doesn’t exactly attack one of the Church’s sacred tenets abercrombie and fitch , but it supersedes its authority.
The basic idea, and Brown goes on at length about this for many pages after the villain is defeated, is that ancient people since before the Egyptian era knew secrets of how people could become as gods but, fearful of their power in the wrong hands, have transmitted this message in symbols and mystery religions ever since. This is what all religions are really about, although it’s hidden somehow. This is explicitly declared to be true of The Bible.
The Noetic Institute and its research into the powers of the mind is uncovering these secrets through its science.
And according to Brown, we’re approaching a time when all these secrets will be revealed and humanity will be transformed by them.
Well, maybe.
He hints it could be 2012, but maybe not.
Yet, much as I have to say I didn’t get emotionally involved rooting for Langdon and his friends, I did find the background interesting. It’s one of those things I’d love to read a lot more about if I had the time.

Exclusive- China’s CCB eyes stake in Malaysian lender EON_8894
Paul Julius Reuter noticed that, with the electric telegraph, news no longer required days or weeks to travel long distances. In the 1850s, the 34-year-old Reuter was based in Aachen — then in the Kingdom of Prussia, now in Germany — close to the borders with the Netherlands and Belgium. He began using the newly opened Berlin–Aachen telegraph line to send news to Berlin. However, there was a 76-mile (122 km) gap in the line between Aachen and Brussels, Belgium’s capital city and financial center. Reuter saw an opportunity to speed up news service between Brussels and Berlin by using homing pigeons to bridge that gap.

Inflation, oil prices create new challenges: IMF
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Soaring oil prices and inflation in emerging economies pose new risks to global recovery but are not yet strong enough to derail it, the International Monetary Fund said on Monday.
The global lender’s latest health-check of world economic prospects marked a departure from recent years when its focus was on the financial crisis and recession in rich nations. The fastest growth in recent years has come from emerging markets like China, Brazil and India, which helped offset the deep downturns in the United States and other rich nations touched off by burst housing bubbles. Now, the IMF warns those very economies risk asset bubbles akin to the ones that sparked the 2007-2009 financial crisis.”The challenge for many emerging and some developing economies is to ensure that present boom-like conditions do not develop into overheating over the coming year,” the IMF said in its World Economic Outlook report.IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard said there was no overwhelming threat to the world economy, but there were trouble spots that need to be dealt with.”There is not any major downside risk at this point,” he told reporters. But he cited a still-ailing financial sector in Europe and a high U.S. debt load as areas demanding attention.Still, even the prospect of oil above $120 a barrel was seen as not enough to imperil the steady global expansion.”Commodity prices have increased more than expected … (but) we don’t think that this time these increases will derail the recovery,Abercrombie And Fitch Mens For UK,” Blanchard said. The IMF’s central scenario remains one of slow-paced recovery. It kept its forecasts for global growth for both 2011 and 2012 at 4.4 percent and 4.5 percent, respectively. However, it said emerging markets have become a particular worry spot. The Fund warned they faced the risk of inflation as they struggle to deal with hard-to-control capital inflows.”We are warning emerging market countries that they are getting to the point where things may be too good,” Blanchard said.RISKS FADING IN RICH NATIONSThe IMF highlighted the searing impact of rising food and commodity prices on poorer countries and warned that inflation will remain elevated for a while.Soaring costs for basic staples stoked the social and economic tensions that have roiled the Arab world. Street protests have toppled dictatorships in Egypt and Tunisia, and left leaders in Yemen and Libya fighting to cling to power. The Fund said inflation pressures were likely to build in developing countries as people pushed for higher wages in the face of pricier food and fuel.Somewhat surprisingly, the IMF said it saw little lasting impact from Japan’s triple disaster — earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis — although it cautioned of great uncertainty. It cut its 2011 forecast for Japanese growth only slightly and raised its projections for 2012.Speaking of advanced economies collectively, the IMF said a recovery was continuing and risks of a “double-dip” recession had faded. But it said unemployment was still high and more had to be done to cut budget deficits in the U.S. and elsewhere.Blanchard said other countries would need to become a greater source of global demand if the United States were to tighten its belt as much as needed.RECOVERY PICKING UPThe fastest growth was still in emerging economies, the IMF said. China was expected to lead the way with 9.6 percent growth this year, followed by India, at an 8.2 percent rate.By contrast, the United States was forecast to grow a sub-par 2.8 percent this year and 2.9 percent in 2012.In Europe, the IMF said recovery was gaining traction despite financial turbulence in Greece, Ireland and Portugal. The IMF revised up its euro zone outlook to 1.6 percent this year and 1.8 percent in 2012.In advanced economies, strengthening the recovery will require keeping monetary policy accommodative as long as wage pressures are subdued,Cheap Abercrombie And Fitch outlet uk, inflation expectations are under control and bank credit is sluggish, the Fund said.In emerging economies, the IMF said, it would be a mistake for policymakers to delay additional policy tightening until rich nations start to raise their rates.(Additional reporting by Glenn Somerville, Lucia Mutikani and Doug Palmer; Editing by Neil Stempleman and Andrew Hay)

In some countries and at some points in history, what news media and the public has considered “newsworthy” has met different definitions. For example, mid-twentieth-century news reporting in the United States focused on political and local issues with important socio-economic impacts,Abercrombie and Fitch Outlet UK, such as the landing of a living person on the moon or the cold war. More recently, the focus similarly remains on political and local issues; however, the news media now comes under criticism for over-emphasis on “non-news” and “gossip” such as celebrities’ personal social issues, local issues of little merit, as well as biased sensationalism of political topics such as terrorism and the economy. Thus newsworthiness does not only depend on the topic, but also the presentation of the topic and the selection of information from that topic

McIlroy vows to bounce back after Masters collapse
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – A travel-weary Rory McIlroy pledged to put his final-round collapse at the Masters behind him by delivering a strong performance in this week’s Malaysian Open.
Following his meltdown at Augusta National on Sunday, McIlroy stressed he would “get over it” when the tournament in Kuala Lumpur starts Thursday.
McIlroy was impressive while handling his collapse, and continued when he posed for a photo with Masters champion Charl Schwartzel in the green jacket on the flight to Malaysia. He posted it on Twitter and said, “Glad one of us has a green jacket on!!!”
“It was a long journey from Augusta, about 30 hours, but I’m looking forward to getting back on the saddle and putting last week’s disappointment behind me,” the 21-year-old McIlroy said Wednesday. “I’ve been excited about this event and never had any intention of pulling out.”
The Northern Irishman will tee off with two-time Malaysian Open champion Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand and world No. 1 Martin Kaymer.
McIlroy led the Masters for 63 holes before a back nine of 43 crushed his hopes of winning his first major. He said he plans to play aggressively at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, adding that the tough opposition and high humidity were his biggest worries.
“I can’t wait to get out playing, but a little disappointed my clubs will only be arriving later today. My caddie has been out walking the course and I take a lot of positives from what happened in the Masters,” he said, noting that he has never played on the Kuala Lumpur course.
Schwartzel, meanwhile, said he has had no time to celebrate last weekend’s victory.
Winning the Masters “has not sunk in yet,” Schwartzel said. “I’m feeling quite tired actually. However, I’m here to win and don’t treat the tournaments any differently. My clubs are not here yet so I haven’t had the time or the opportunity to practice, but I played in Malaysia a few years back and know what to expect.”
Schwartzel will tee off with fellow South African Louis Oosthuizen, the British Open winner, and defending champion Noh Seung-yul of South Korea.
