Prof. Krishna Kumar a noted Historian was entrusted with a project funded by the UN organization to study the subject of History as taught in Pakistan as also India. The focus was mainly on the freedom struggle aspect because we have a common past in this regard. His study reveals Quote- “While the Pakistani texts, for example, depict Gandhi as a Hindu leader, Indian textbooks elevate him to a mythic status. Similarly, while the Pakistani books project Jinnah as a semi-divine visionary, the Indian ones refer to him with resentment.”-Unquote. [His book: Prejudice and Pride] As part of their divide & rule policy the British had planted a great-lie, soon after gaining a foot-hold in this country that the Aryans were migrants come from the north of Himalayas. The idea was to actively promote a North-South divide! In fact excavation work in Harappa and Mohenjodaro was brought to an abrupt halt during the 20th century mainly because they dug out evidence that showed Aryans had been living in those areas even 3000 years earlier! And that would have constituted incontrovertible evidence to show these so called Aryans were very much residing in those areas even 3000 years ago thereby damning the cock and bull story an entire Nation was persuaded to believe for centuries! However the purpose of planting the lie was more than accomplished! It is based on this belief that Aryans are aliens and Dravidians are the original settlers of India that later on Eevera of Tamilnadu floated Dravida Kazhagam! And all those words in Tamil language that had anything to do with Sankskrit language at all were eliminated from the language altogether!! Strictly speaking, this ought not to shock us at all! After all are we not ourselves guilty of that offence viz., distorting History from day one i.e., after gaining independence? For instance have we not projected Dr. BR Amebedkar as a freedom-fighter whereas in reality he has not even on a single occasion ever spoken in favour of our getting freedom? Having done that will not the posterity be mis-led into believing that as the truth itself? Was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru not aware of it? Then how come he continues to be projected as a FREEDOM FIGHTER? Of course we have our own compulsions like having to maintain peace and the like. But then the fact remains that History has been distorted!! That way those few young guys from the UK who had come with ship-loads of commodities to do business here and eventually became our rulers for over 2 centuries obviously also had their own compulsions in planting that seed of a whopper hollister ! HISTORY as a subject necessarily draws its strength from TRUTH. When unduly meddled or tampered with, whatever be the reasons, it becomes a MISNOMER! It becomes NON-DETAIL, if not fiction!
